Honest TestingFree SoftwareNovember 2026
"Free" is the most powerful word in software marketing. But in our testing of 15 popular "free" tools, only 4 delivered genuinely free, usable functionality without strings. The other 11 used dark patterns, hidden limitations, or outright deception. Here's what we found — and which free tools are actually worth your time.
1. 7-Zip: File compression. Open source, no ads, no limitations, handles every format. Replaces WinZip ($39.99/year) completely. Verdict: 100% free, no catch.
2. LibreOffice: Full office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint equivalents). Open source, opens all Microsoft formats, no subscription. For 95% of users, it replaces Microsoft 365 ($99.99/year). Verdict: 100% free, no catch.
3. HandBrake: Video converter. Open source, converts to any format, no watermarks, no time limits. Replaces UniConverter ($59.99/year) for most users. Verdict: 100% free, no catch.
4. DaVinci Resolve: Professional video editing. The free version is Hollywood-grade (used in actual movies). No watermark, no time limit, no feature lock beyond the most advanced color tools. Verdict: 100% free for 99% of users.
5–8. "Freemium" PDF editors (4 tools tested): All let you "edit for free" — then slap a giant watermark on your document when you try to save. Or limit you to 3 pages. Or require sign-up and then spam you. The truth: for actual PDF editing, use PDF24 Creator (free) or pay for PDFelement once.
9–10. "Free" antivirus (2 tools): One bundled a browser hijacker. The other showed full-screen pop-up ads every 20 minutes. Both had "upgrade now" buttons in every menu. Use Windows Defender (built-in, genuinely free) or the free version of Avast/AVG — they're honest about limitations.
11–12. "Free" video editors (2 tools): Both watermarked exports. One required creating an account and agreeing to let them use your videos for training. Use DaVinci Resolve or CapCut (free, no watermark).
13. "Free" data recovery: Free scan (useless — you can't recover anything without paying). Classic bait-and-switch. Use Recuva (free for basic recovery) or the free scan of paid tools to check if recovery is possible before paying.
14. "Free" VPN: Logs all your traffic and sells it (that's how they make money). Slow speeds. Data caps. Use ProtonVPN Free (genuinely free, no logs, no data cap) or pay for a reputable one.
15. "Free" photo editor: "Free" for 7 days, then $8.99/month. No mention of the trial on the download page. Use GIMP (free, open-source, Photoshop-level) or Photopea (free in-browser, looks exactly like Photoshop).
